value of library space

We have been discussing the value of library space for many years. Yesterday, April 1, 2009, we had an internal discussion about the economy and the value of libraries. An article published in the NY Times, April 1, 2009 – “Downturn Puts New Stresses on Libraries,” by SUSAN SAULNY describes the issues.

As librarians we must recognize that the “library as place” is not something we created because we want to show value for our services. Real people need library space to improve their careers, find jobs and do business research. These people are coming to libraries for a reason – value.

Libraries are America’s competitive advantage. This article is an example of the importance of libraries. Take note – if you want the economy to grow, look at whats already growing.
