{"id":115,"date":"2009-06-11T12:54:17","date_gmt":"2009-06-11T16:54:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.acohen.com\/blog\/?p=115"},"modified":"2026-03-05T14:42:41","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T18:42:41","slug":"academic-libraries-6-lessons-one-campus-learned-about-e-textbooks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.acohen.com\/blog\/academic-libraries-6-lessons-one-campus-learned-about-e-textbooks\/","title":{"rendered":"Academic and School Libraries &#8211; &#8220;Lessons Learned About E-Textbooks and E-Books&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Academic learning spaces and e-book readers\u00a0are a subject that our team is focused\u00a0on understanding.\u00a0 It affects library space planning and design.\u00a0 Indeed,\u00a0libraries are unique learning spaces that improve student success rates and ebook\u00a0technology\u00a0is changing education.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, an article in the Chronicle of Higher Education demonstrated the\u00a0challenges of ebooks\u00a0and the lessons that can be learned from innovative projects.\u00a0 E-book readers are in a transition as they get to market and it is very easy to reject the new technology because it doesn&#8217;t work.\u00a0 Developers don&#8217;t\u00a0always see eye-to-eye with users so it takes time for these tools to hit critical mass.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Lessons Learned from e-books\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211204132222\/https:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/weekly\/v55\/i39\/39a01801.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">6 lessons learned from e-textbooks <\/a>includes a good overview of the challenges that higher educational institutions face when they start moving toward e-books and e-textbooks; learning curve, some professors innovators, battery life,\u00a0 subjects are not equally friendly and\u00a0impact matters. \u00a0For example, at Northwest Missouri State University, the Sony\u00a0e-book reader didn&#8217;t provide the type of navigation\u00a0that users\u00a0were used to and it became uncomfortable for some students\u00a0to leave their\u00a0text book behind.\u00a0 They expected it to be the same as a normal\u00a0book and it\u2019s not the same.\u00a0 It is new technology and it requires training.\u00a0 Here, Academic Libraries have an opportunity to become relevant by providing training and support.<\/p>\n<p>We know it will take time for students and professors\u00a0to learn how\u00a0to use\u00a0ebook technology illustrating why impact matters.\u00a0 We also know that the publishing community needs to\u00a0extend their products to support e-books and e-textbooks.\u00a0 This will take time, for example,\u00a0science materials\u00a0get good coverage via the ejournals, but\u00a0econtent\u00a0for humanities\u00a0is taking time to get to market. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the <a title=\"private school library design\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lyndoninstitute.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Lyndon Institute<\/span><\/a>, ACA developed a unique program to support critical needs by recommended kindle as a solution.\u00a0 The library had a flood and\u00a0lost its entire collection.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The school needed a\u00a0solution and fast.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>p&gt;Today, the project has its successes and challenges.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t mean that the Kindles\u00a0are perfect, but\u00a0the solution does provide students with more access to books and\u00a0journals then ever\u00a0before.
