{"id":1675,"date":"2014-02-05T14:05:24","date_gmt":"2014-02-05T18:05:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.acohen.com\/blog\/?p=1675"},"modified":"2023-11-17T13:24:06","modified_gmt":"2023-11-17T17:24:06","slug":"moocs-and-libraries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.acohen.com\/blog\/moocs-and-libraries\/","title":{"rendered":"Kicking the Tires on MOOC&#8217;s and Library Planning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The MOOC&#8217;s offer unique opportunities to educators, librarians and leaders.\u00a0 They offer a rapid deployment of educational resources, challenging the ways higher education will function in our times.\u00a0 The MOOC&#8217;s are possible because of the availability of a networked world that is now mobile as well as connected.\u00a0 They offer services to unmet and unsolved educational needs.<\/p>\n<p>At ALA Midwinter, a panel discussed the advances in MOOC&#8217;s and higher education. \u00a0Bryan Alexander, Anya Kamenetz, Ray Schroeder, Cathy De Rosa, and Skip Prichard discussed the impact of the MOOC&#8217;s and libraries.\u00a0 Cathy De Rosa, OCLC Vice President for the Americas and Global Vice President of Marketing, shared <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oclc.org\/en-US\/events\/collective-insight.html\">OCLC collective insight research<\/a>.\u00a0 Bryan Alexander author of the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/newdigitalstorytelling.net\/\">The New Digital Storytelling<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>also provided insights.<\/p>\n<p>In traditional education, MOOC&#8217;s mean giving over authority and control of the classroom.\u00a0 However, according to Georgia Tech, Alumni Magazine &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/issuu.com\/gtalumni\/docs\/8904\/25\">Kicking the Tires on Tech&#8217;s first MOOC<\/a>&#8220;, 113,668 students enrolled in the Universities first computational investing MOOC class.\u00a0 Over 70,000 students watched a video from the course.\u00a0 The numbers are astounding; the size of the audience is very large.<\/p>\n<p>The library world understands that local-ness is especially vital in times of rapid change. In other words, they are organizations that can achieve coordination, synergy between higher education offerings and the wider public.\u00a0 The possibilities of higher education exist; now it is time to develop finders to help our local community improve educational conditions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acohen.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/mooc.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\"
