{"id":1757,"date":"2014-04-21T21:48:04","date_gmt":"2014-04-22T01:48:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.acohen.com\/blog\/?p=1757"},"modified":"2023-12-13T08:11:14","modified_gmt":"2023-12-13T12:11:14","slug":"how-libraries-and-learning-theory-are-put-into-practice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.acohen.com\/blog\/how-libraries-and-learning-theory-are-put-into-practice\/","title":{"rendered":"How Libraries and Learning Theory are Put into Practice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Librarians have the opportunity to guide patrons on their quest for research information, both online and in the stacks, gradually aligning the responsibility of the learning to the learner themselves.\u00a0<a title=\"Directed learning activities\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20151203222146\/http:\/\/www.palomar.edu\/bsihsi\/LeftNav\/TLCNav\/documents\/DLA\/What%20are%20Directed%20Learning%20Activities.pdf\">Directed learning activities\u00a0<\/a>(DLAs) can help <strong>academic libraries<\/strong> engage in active learning support.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Instituted by many <strong>college libraries and learning resource centers<\/strong>, students can build their skills through the completion of a series of practice activities. DLAs can be effective in teaching grammar, writing, computer technology, Internet navigation, the possibilities are endless.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In 1968 <a title=\"Malcolm Knowles\" href=\" http:\/\/elearningindustry.com\/the-adult-learning-theory-andragogy-of-malcolm-knowles \">Malcolm Knowles<\/a> projected the ancient Greek word \u201candragogy\u201d into educational discourse, as the art and science of helping students learn. As opposed to pedagogy, andragogy focuses only on the adult learning experience. Terminology aside, in defining a way to reach adult learners educators provide differentiated learning strategies addressing how adults learn in contrast to how children learn.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Using <a title=\"Bloom's Taxonomy\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bing.com\/images\/search?q=blooms+taxonomy&amp;id=C30688E7D38D7059A921A4B66B85A1AAC5D6411C&amp;FORM=IQFRBA#view=detail&amp;id=F9315F5535A5ECEA4D9729E6480F0E9A3C6DE264&amp;selectedIndex=1\">Bloom&#8217;s Taxonomy<\/a> and adult learning strategies, librarians can create a <strong>library service program<\/strong> that can both actively engage and promote cooperative learning amongst students.\u00a0Libraries can help foster lifelong learning DLA&#8217;s to adults and assist with community college retention rates and remediation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Shifting from directed learning strategies, libraries offer other opportunities for\u00a0<a title=\"self-directed learning\" href=\"http:\/\/edtheory.blogspot.com\/2011\/10\/teaching-self-directed-learning-to.html\">self-directed learning<\/a> (SDL). \u00a0As a cornerstone of adult learning theory, SDL&#8217;s are dominant in the world of e-learning. \u00a0The development of hybrid and online courses; digital library archives that provide the learner with unique data mining opportunities. Libraries are natural places for self-directed inquiry and learning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>How can these adult learning strategies work toward economic growth?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Self-directed public library spaces can be a useful tool to help small businesses and individuals gain access to information; which in turn contributes to learning opportunities. Libraries provide a useful location for<em> informed<\/em> collaboration.
