{"id":2228,"date":"2015-07-24T09:07:45","date_gmt":"2015-07-24T13:07:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.acohen.com\/blog\/?p=2228"},"modified":"2026-03-05T14:42:11","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T18:42:11","slug":"library-service-and-operational-strategies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.acohen.com\/blog\/library-service-and-operational-strategies\/","title":{"rendered":"Collection Preservation in the Digital World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In today&#8217;s changing world,\u00a0\u00a0library collection and preservation\u00a0services need to be adaptable to the current user&#8217;s needs. Consider the library with valuable space on campus or downtown: should they use that space for valuable books and materials? Or keep it more open with tech and\u00a0Wi-Fi access?<\/p>\n<p>An outdated customer experience and disengaged employees can quickly make a library seem irrelevant. When collection and service \u00a0strategies lose focus, \u00a0funding pressure arises&#8230;and libraries fall under attack. Some &#8220;hotspots&#8221;\u00a0are easy to see: passive collection spaces quickly look like good candidates to be taken over by administrators to make room for faculty or IT.<\/p>\n<p>But what if that space could be repurposed for project-based work areas? Maybe a new Makerspace or learning commons that includes adaptable, flexible display areas\u00a0and collaborative seating. This insight lead Aaron Cohen Associates \/<b>Library Consultant<\/b> to a new concept, a library space program that focuses on new strategies and configurations for conservation and access.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/connect.ala.org\/alcts\">ALCTS Preservation Showdown<\/a> at the American Library Association (ALA), moderated by <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150906014140\/http:\/\/library.tulane.edu\/about\/directories\/staff\/annie-peterson\">Annie Peterson<\/a>\u00a0(Preservation Librarian, Tulane University), illustrated the strategic challenges facing library collections and their caretakers. The program invited\u00a0librarians from esteemed institutions, including Harvard and Johns Hopkins, to participate. Two teams went head-to-head in a debate format on the following topic:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Funding to support access to rare book and manuscripts collections should be entirely dedicated to digitization, not to conservation treatment of original artifacts.&#8221; <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The reaction from the audience and the participants\u00a0was fascinating. It illustrated that library bottlenecks arise when we do not balance preservation with digital\u00a0access\u00a0to collections. Debate participants&#8217; statements were indeed\u00a0logical; however, the discussion also brought out emotional responses that showed the severe shortage of collection development solutions associated with library funding.<\/p>\n<p>Our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acohen.com\/team.htm\">Library Architecture project work<\/a> is also about access and conservation. Below is a visual of the conceptual process by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rpbw.com\/\">Renzo Piano building workshop<\/a> for the new <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20151024184059\/http:\/\/www.snfcc.org:80\/the-national-library-of-greece\/overview\/\">National Library of Greece<\/a>.
