{"id":26,"date":"2009-04-03T13:10:14","date_gmt":"2009-04-03T17:10:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.acohen.com\/blog\/?p=26"},"modified":"2023-11-13T12:57:55","modified_gmt":"2023-11-13T16:57:55","slug":"learning-spaces-history-of-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.acohen.com\/blog\/learning-spaces-history-of-design\/","title":{"rendered":"understanding learning spaces"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the oldest learning spaces is the\u00a0church, synagoge and mosque.\u00a0\u00a0They consist of a place to study, a teacher and\u00a0students and\u00a0a holy book &#8211; (ex. bible, torah\u00a0or koran).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There are\u00a0lessons we can learn from religious environments.\u00a0\u00a0By\u00a0observing learning spaces within a religous environment we will see\u00a0it consists of two parts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A physical place to work &#8211; (ex. desk, chair and book).\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Activities that takes place\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0(ex. lessons from the\u00a0preist, rabbi or mullah).\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In our\u00a0evaluation of learning spaces, we like to envision them as pockets of activity. Learning spaces which are dynamic have a mix of elements.\u00a0 You can have two or three people working together.\u00a0 When there are more then six to eight people in an environment two modes of behavior and activity take place:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Informal &#8211; cafe, meeting place.<\/li>\n<li>Formal &#8211; classroom, training area.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Students working in an environment require learning spaces.\u00a0The way you can measure their success is by observing the activity that is taking place.
