Lighting designs are a powerful element that shapes uwer experience, influences mood, and supports the diverse learning activities. As a library programmer and design consultant, we leverage professional expertise to move beyond basic illumination towards a sophisticated visual and functional experience. Our holistic approach includes strategic layering for function and ambiance. Here are some fundamental principles of ambient, task, and accent lighting that can help you with your learning space, learning stage, interactive classroom or library design.

Three-Layer Lighting Strategy

(ambient, task lighting and accent lighting)

Successful library lighting is about user needs and purpose. This is achieved through a program planned three-layer strategy that you can achieve.

Ambient Lighting:

The base ambient light provides the general, diffuse illumination essential for comfortable navigation and overall visual comfort. We aim for uniform light using high-efficacy LED panels and indirect linear fixtures. Our analysis shows that well-distributed ambient light from sources with good optical control minimizes shadows and creates a strong base. Typically, this involves targeting an average illuminance suitable for general activities (e.g., 300-500 lux on horizontal planes), always subject to specific area needs and adhering to IES (Illuminating Engineering Society) standards.

Task Lighting:

Focused clarity for every user activity is crucial to enhance learning activities. You need to conceptualize how task lighting directly at reading tables, study carrels, computer stations, and service desks. Options include individually controlled LED desk lamps, discreet under-cabinet lights for shelves, or elegant slim linear pendants strategically placed over stacks. Our suggestion is to consider how you want the fixtures to provide focused light (e.g., 500-750 lux directly on the task area), minimizing eye strain and enhancing concentration.

Accent Lighting:

Adding depth and directing accent lighting is where experience meets function. The development of accent lighting, such as LED spotlights or track lights with narrow beam angles, is employed to highlight architectural features, display areas, reference points, access services, new books, artwork, special collections, or wayfinding elements. This layer adds visual interest, creates depth, and subtly guides patrons through the library space.

Start a self study and develop a layered approach to your learning space. It is fundamental and it ensures functionality for diverse group collaboration and research tasks. We aim to enhance the visual hierarchy of the space, and allow for the creation of varied behavioral functions within different library zones. It is time to update the learning space and move beyond basic illumination to craft a sophisticated and responsive visual experience.

Use our Lighting AI to Start Planning: We can develop an AI for your library, firm or organization: Contact Us for More Info

As a library design and programming team, we believe lighting needs to focus on functionality.
